The Marsaskala Road Relay has a special allure of its own and like most years the Club was present with a good number of athletes – 19 to be exact – making up five teams of four with only one having to decline at the eleventh hour. Meantime our three male teams and the remaining whole foursome for the ladies gave battle valiantly and to their utmost, as witnessed by the Club emerging the best overall, when both the Men and the Females finishing the 20km course in second place. Moreover, in a field of 17 male teams, the club finished in the top half of the table, in the 2nd, 6th and 8th place. A truly wonderful achievement.
Mark Herrera, Matthew Scicluna, Brian Magri and Luke Micallef teamed up as our foremost squad, finishing in 1 hour 4minutes and four seconds, just over half a minute away from top spot. Indeed, this would have been a winning time in six other occasions in the history of this course, since its inception in 2005. A truly remarkable feat.
Team B consisted of James Anastasi, Mark Mifsud, Chris Bezzina and Mark Axiaq, finishing on 1’12”20 seconds, with Peter Azzopardi, David Herrera, Andrew Gauci and Gilbert Gatt making up Team C with a time just 1 minute 10 seconds behind. Furthermore, Matthew and Luke posted the fastest legs, at 16.06 and 15.33 respectively.
Lisa Bezzina continued her amazing improvement – yes everyone, touch wood or whatever please! – and blazed the road to come in on 17.36. Like Luke, hers was the best timing of the day and a personal best on this route. Backing Lisa up were Celine Pace, Hannah Pace and Catherine Chetcuti with literally the whole team giving their heart out, only to be pipped to the post by less than a minute over the 20km. The other team, which unfortunately could not qualify as only three members were present (the fourth called to duty service) were Joanne Gauci, Alison Tabone and Paula Caruana.
Heartfelt congratulations from the Club and all its members for a truly memorable performance and effort by all our representatives.
A very well done to all. You have certainly make Pembroke Athleta Athletics and Triathlon PROUD once again.
